The House of Representatives voted today, by the narrowest possible margin and after an unusually emotional debate, to set a timetable for bringing American troops home from Iraq.
A few Democratic defections actually came from liberals who felt the bill didn’t go far enough. Only two Republicans voted in favor of the bill.
Bush is expected to make some comments on the bill in about 15 minutes, though I think we can predict that he’s going to repeat his pledge to veto it and make all measure of insinuations that we’re not “supporting the troops.”
Bush statement begins. He’s using the troops as a metaphorical human shield right now.
Bush says Congress “abdicated its responsibility.” HA!
The bill has “no chance of becoming law.”
“Billions for pet projects that has nothing to do with winning the war on terror.” Okay, I’ve had enough of this. Gulf Coast reconstruction and drought relief aren’t important!? But endless occupation of Iraq is.
