It is now 11:30 a.m., and Chancellor Nancy Belck has handed over her resignation. The woman who oversaw the vast improvements to this urban university with the building of South campus, on-campus dormitories, and re-designing the library has officially decided that she can no longer effectively run her position.
For the entire summer we have seen distraction after distraction take place that have ultimately superceded anything she has done during her tenure. Initially placing the blame on the "rogue spender" Jim Buck, one could easily see it was a matter of time before this event took place. Could her presence have been a hinderance to the progress of UNO? We can't really know, as previously stated the additions to the campus can only be viewed in a positive light. But bringing in cronies from your last administrative position who are ineffective and dangerous to university do make you yourself an ineffective and dangerous person to the life of our university.
Anything that detracts from making our campus the best and brightest there is should be trimmed off like fat from a steak. Our quest is perfection, and our community should recognize that anything other than this is a nuisance. I would advocate that the new Chancellor be one that understands the potential at UNO to be a legitimate rival campus to Lincoln. I would also ask that this person seriously investigate other lower persons in the administration to see if they qualify as meeting this ideal of a positive standard of growth.
Supreme Chancellor Belck's presence has stifled discussion about her and other since fired administrators in class now since the beginning of the semester. UNO will go on, and problems caused by her ultimately need to be fixed, but hopefully this marks a turning point for the University of Nebraska-Omaha. The appointinment of a forward-looking Chancellor with no fear of Lincoln or Regents should be the hope of the students and faculty of this university.
