Loess (pronounced "luss"), is German for loose or crumbly. It is a gritty, lightweight, porous material composed of tightly packed grains of quartz, feldspar, mica, and other minerals. Loess is the source of most of our Nation's rich agricultural soils and is common in the U.S. and around the world. However, Iowa's Loess Hills are unusual because the layers of loess are extraordinarily thick, as much as 200 feet in some places. The extreme thickness of the loess layers and the intricately carved terrain of the Loess Hills make them a rare geologic feature. Shaanxi, China, is the only other location where loess layers are as deep and extensive. Though much older (2.5 million years) and much thicker (nearly 300 feet) than Iowa's loess, the Shaanxi loess hills have been greatly altered by both natural and human activity and no longer retain their original characteristics.

After days of overcast, sky, there was finally some nice light in Omaha. This is shot in the Old Market section of Omaha just before the sun set.

At first I thought that these were curtains. It was really torn plastic sheeting blowing in the wind. Shot in downtown Omaha, Nebraska.

This was some really cool light from the setting sun that was reflecting off of another building. Shot in downtown Omaha.

It's under renovation. I don't know who it was originally built for. It's a pretty cool building.

The decoration in the arch reminds me of the thing on the statue of libery's head. But maybe that's just me.

The corner of 14th&Farnam in Omaha. The large building is The Paxton. It started life as a the second building for the Paxton hotel in 1928. It's got a long and storied history. Notice the color difference on the right facade - the light is the original color. The dark was accumulated dirt and grime over 80+ years, and has been removed by powerwashing to restore the original colors. It's being made into a luxury condo building.
In the foreground is the 'head' end of the Gene Leahy mall which runs from 14th street to Heartland of America Park on the Missouri River.

It was close to feeding time at the zoo and so this bear was running and pacing it's enclosure.

I always liked the signs/ads/billboards painted on the side of brick buildings. There's not as many as there used to be in Omaha, but there's still quite a few, and even some new ones.

Still working on getting the subject backlit, yet save details on it, trying something different.

Bemis Park is just south of the former Tech high school. I'd never walked around it until today, only driven by. What caught my eye was the statue of a woman and child. I got out to take a picture of that and discovered a nice park in relatively good shape, despite being in an area that varies from block to block. There's a map of Omaha's parks and boulevard project, tennis courts, a playground, several picnic tables, a spot for charcoal grilling, a trail, and lots of greenspace.

I had never seen such a thing. Heat advisory this afternoon, maybe that had something to do with it.

Antony and Cleopatra, Elmwood Park, Omaha. One of the few free Shakespeare festivals in the country.
That set looks like a big clawed hand; they're all in the clutches of cruel fate, maybe. Actually they are all constantaly clutching and grabbing as selfishly as they can. One keeps wondering, "now, *who* am I supposed to be rooting for?"
I like the way you can see Joel, Crow, and Tom Servo in silhouette, too.
