The District was placed on the Kansas City Register of Historic Places in 1984. It contains some of the most architecturally distinctive private residences in the entire city. The area (which once had been the site of a fairground park in the 1880s) evidences architectural preferences associated with the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Another characteristic of Roanoke is that it takes advantage of the natural topography of the land. Homes are sited on peaks and rises, and are oriented toward the winding roads. The area was home to many persons of renown including artist Thomas Hart Benton, Carrie Volker Wagner (daughter of William Volker), and Richard Stern (philanthropist).
Historic Kansas City Foundation has been the face of historic preservation in the Kansas City community for over thirty (30) years. Our mission is to demonstrate the economic and cultural value of preserving the built environment.
