  A Stroll Down 40th Street

  This blog will provide a vitural walk to all the stops on the 2005 walking tour published by the Joslyn Castle Neighborhood Association. The brochure was made possible through the work of a CLG(Certified Local Government)Grant administered by our City of Omaha Planning Department and funded by the U.S.Department of the Interior, National Park Service. I also want to thank the many neighborhood volunteers who took up this task of researching and publishing our history.

  I am a member of 2020 Omaha and it was discussed that we should start a Blog. Of course none of us are very computer savy and only one of us has ever blogged before. So in the name of looking at some of the great Midcentury architecture in our city I begin this blog. Hopefully it is entertaining as well as informational. Lets start everyone out with a picture of our Landmarked pedestrian bridge over Dodge Street. Designed by a local engineer, it was the only pedestrian bridge with enough space on each end to create a structural and functional work of art.

  Good Bye Tar-ghetto

  Drew Davies, principal of Oxide Design and renowned graphic designer, recently posted a post-mortem of our beloved Saddle Creek Target.

  

  I had an interesting opportunity the other day, and I thought some of the blog reading public out there would appreciate it as much as I did. You see, they recently shut down a Target store not far from my office, in midtown Omaha. (They moved it into a new building about 2 miles down the road.) As a god-fearing designer, I obviously choose to shop at Target when I’m in need of just about anything. So I’d been inside this building dozens of times over the last few years. I was sad to see it go, although it had been getting a little rough around the edges, as far as Targets go. But I watched with morbid curiosity as they shuttered the doors, and started throwing various broken-up pieces of signage into the giant dumpsters out back. (No, none of it was salvagable: believe me, I looked.) Then one day, it happened. Commerical auction of all the store fixtures and left behinds. It gave me the opportunity to go inside the belly of the dead beast, autopsy in progress. What follows is my photographic record of the graphic, disturbing experience.

  American Memory at the Library of Congress

  The Library of Congress has a collection of digitized multimedia titled American Memory.

  American Memory provides free and open access through the Internet to written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps, and sheet music that document the American experience. It is a digital record of American history and creativity. These materials, from the collections of the Library of Congress and other institutions, chronicle historical events, people, places, and ideas that continue to shape America, serving the public as a resource for education and lifelong learning.

  This is a great resource for anyone interested in history. The ability to see and hear primary sources makes history interesting and addicting.

  Unidentified one-man band at the Mountain Music Festival, Asheville, North Carolina

  I first came across this collection a few years ago. I was designing a wedding invitation and was looking for images of music and North Carolina. I was pleasantly suprised to find some great photos of folk musicians in the 1930s in the John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip. There are also recordings om many of these musicians. I spent hours browsing through images.

  If you find an image you love, you can order a reproduction from the Library of Congress. The fees are pretty reasonable.

  I made some interesting discoveries in the American Memory collection this weekend. I’ll show you what I found over the next few days. In the mean time, head over to American Memory and see what treasures you can find.
