Omaha Police are asking those who live in Dundee to keep a close watch on the neighborhood. Investigators are trying to catch a man who has been burglarizing homes since April.
More than a dozen homes in the area from Dodge to Leavenworth, between Elmwood Park and 50th, have been hit.
Mary Ann Greene-Walsh woke up Tuesday morning a victim.
“They think he’s getting bolder,” she says. “He’s using a crowbar. They haven’t seen that before. We’re the first houses east of 50th.”
The burglar hit two neighbors the same night. He targets purses that are visible from the outside.
The thief plans his burglaries. Before he broke into one home he propped open the front screen-door with a potted plant, seemingly to make for an easy escape route if someone caught him in the act.
Police have pictures of the suspect that were captured by a surveillance camera at a Bellevue Wal-Mart. Investigators say he was using a debit card there, just hours after it had been stolen from a home in Dundee.
It’s also possible that the burglar has spoken with one of his victims. Mary Ann Greene-Walsh called her own phone that was stolen this week.
“I said, ‘you were supposed to pick me up. Where are you?’ He said, ‘who is this?’ I said, ‘who is this? You have my phone!’”
The burglar knows Dundee well. He might even be using the Dodge Street underpass for cover. Two of the stolen purses have been left on a porch across the street.
